Zirconia Ceramic Uses in Dentistry
Feb 03, 2023
In dentistry, three types of zirconia ceramic are used: tetragonal zirconia polycrystal, magnesium stabilized, and ZTA. Zirconia ceramics possess the properties required for effective tooth restoration. It is aesthetically pleasing, has the necessary strength, and is a significant improvement over metal dental materials used in the mid-20th century because it does not cause allergic reactions.
Zirconia is used in dentistry for posts, crowns and bridges, and implants.
Dental Posts – Zirconia ceramic dental posts are the first choice for restoring the anterior of teeth due to their aesthetic value. They have been used as a replacement for metal posts that caused gray discoloration since the 1990s. The use of zirconia ceramic posts prevents a corrosive reaction in the mouth and surrounding tissue, resulting in burning, pain, and a metallic taste.
Crowns - Zirconia crowns are preferred over metal and gold crowns because of their strength, durability, and aesthetic appearance. Zirconia crowns can be full, translucent, or layered. Because zirconia ceramics are adaptable, they can be cemented in place or installed with screws. Because of the strength of the zirconia ceramic material, it can be used with patients who grind their teeth or chew forcefully.
Abutments - Because of its versatility, zirconia ceramic is used for abutments. It can be designed using CAD or a wax impression. These techniques enable the abutment to be custom designed for a perfect fit. When the gingival tissue is thin, a zirconia ceramic abutment prevents light from exposing the abutment and helps to maintain the aesthetic appearance. Their color can be changed to match the neighboring teeth.
Zirconia Ceramic Brackets - Polycrystalline zirconia ceramic brackets have replaced metal brackets as an alternative to alumina ceramic brackets. Brackets are used in orthodontia to restrain teeth and keep brace wires away from the teeth.
Dental Implants - In 2011, zirconia ceramic dental implants were approved for use. They are biocompatible and extremely stable. For many years, the only method for inserting dental implants was with metal screws, which were unsightly and caused allergic reactions or sensitivities. Zirconia ceramic implants are available in a variety of configurations and eliminate dark lines along the gum line.
Furthermore, metal-free zirconia ceramic implants are a better choice for gum health because zirconia ceramic retains less plaque and calculus, especially with one-piece implants. Zirconia ceramic's exceptional flexural strength and fracture toughness ensure a tight and long-lasting fit.
