What Is A Dental Bridge?

Jul 07, 2023

A dental bridge is a prosthesis designed to look like a single tooth or a small group of teeth (up to three teeth). To fill the gaps left by missing teeth, the prosthesis is placed between a person's natural teeth. A traditional dental bridge is attached to either side's crowns. To hold the bridge in place, crowns are fitted to the two teeth immediately adjacent to the missing tooth area.

Dental Bridge Replacement

Dental bridge treatment is typically completed in two dental visits. The teeth that hold the bridge in place are reshaped at the first dental visit to accommodate the placement of the crowns. The bridge is then imprinted to ensure that it fits comfortably once installed. Finally, a makeshift bridge is constructed. When the permanent bridge is finished, the patient will return for a second appointment a few weeks later. At this time, the permanent bridge and adjacent crowns are installed.

Benefits

Dental bridges, like other dental restorations, can restore oral function while also improving the appearance of the smile. However, the ease, speed, and cost of treatment distinguish bridges from dental implants. Dental bridge treatment is minimally invasive and usually takes two to four weeks to complete. The cost of treatment is much lower than that of dental implants because no surgical procedure is required and treatment can be completed in two dental appointments.
