Mimicking Nature: Layering Techniques For Zirconia Restorations

Plan the Layer Design

Consider the final shape, color, and opacity needed to replicate the natural tooth. Map out the layering scheme including:

  • Opaque dentin underlying the framework to mask its color.
  • Translucent enamel layers with chroma gradients towards the incisal.
  • Incisal layer with intense translucency and opalescence.
  • Layer thickness is determined by final anatomy and desired optical properties.


Prepare the Framework

Ensure the zirconia framework is properly designed and fabricated:

  • Anatomical design with appropriate support for subsequent layers.
  • Surfaces are prepped for bonding through sandblasting.
  • Steam cleaned and free of any contaminants.
  • Allow 0.3mm minimum thickness for layering porcelain.


First Dentin Layer

The first opaque dentin layer provides depth and blocks out darkness:

  • Apply an even 1mm thick layer focused on the cervical half.
  • Sculpt essential internal anatomy like ridges.
  • Allow complete drying between build-up increments.


Develop Chroma

Add translucent enamel layers with increasing chroma:

  • Stack multiple thinner layers up the crown length.
  • Concentrate high-value layers more incisally.
  • Blend and smooth color transitions.
  • Contour proximal and facial shape with detail.


Final Layers

Complete the restorations with specialized final layers:

  • Incisal layer for halo effect and opalescence. Feather edges.
  • Translucent layer to amplify depth. Keep thin.
  • Add mamelon effects and subtle textures if needed.


Firing

Firing ensures layers are fully sintered and bonded:

  • Bisque fire after each layer application. Do not over-fire.
  • Correct firing shrinkage with additional layers as needed.
  • Final glaze firing polishes and blends all layers together.
